The Birmingham Theatre School

Structure and content of the

The year is divided into three terms of approximately twelve weeks in duration. Each week is normally five working days, although in the course of productions it is often necessary to work at weekends and in the evenings as well. Students should prepare themselves for the eventuality of working at any time that they are needed.

Each day there are three teaching times: One in the morning, and two in the afternoon. The morning sessions are scheduled for technique classes and formal lectures. The afternoon classes are primarily for rehearsals of productions.

Assessment presentations and audition panels will normally occur in the tenth week and productions in the twelfth, although this may vary in the second and third term.

Students will be notified well in advance of any evening, weekend or holiday commitments and will be expected to make themselves available as and when required.

Work Experience and Productions
During the course of the year a student can normally expect to work on five productions staged by the school. However, with careful planning and additional commitment a further two or three plays can be experienced during their course of study.

Projects undertaken will vary between small scale studio productions in pub theatre venues, to large scale high profile plays at one of the primary theatres in the city centre. The third term graduation performance is usually staged on the main stage of the Old Rep Theatre.

In addition to this students may be offered the chance to participate in productions staged by outside professional companies with permission from the school. Students of the school have regularly been employed in a supporting capacity across the entire Midlands region. Work in the profession itself is invaluable, as it provides both contacts and public exposure on a much larger scale.

In the final term students will perform their graduation production presenting their work to prospective agents and directors.
